An old vine-grower's cottage, its two vaulted cellars and its outbuildings in a walled garden less than a hundred kilometres from Paris.
Ninety kilometres to the south of Paris and just five minutes from a town with all shops and amenities, in the midst of an unspoilt village.
The facades of this robust stone building, standing near to a small village square, feature quarry stone blocks, recently repointed with lime rendering. The house and its outbuildings are laid out in a U-shape which, completed by an old wall, closes a plot spanning 600 m².
Once through the tall opening of a porch way where a vehicle could be parked, this house is entered via the garden. Although the neighbouring houses are visible, they do not directly overlook this property. They form a timeless landscape of old buildings, once given over to use as barns, small village farmhouses and vine-growers' cottages. Here, grapes are no longer a source of activity, the only vestiges of which are a robust architecture, vaulted cellars and a few vines grown for domestic purposes such as can be found on this property.
The vine-grower's cottageThis vine-grower's cottage, spanning two levels topped with attic space under the roofing framework, is laid out in an L-shape in a corner of the plot. It has a lower extension which houses the kitchen.
The house is entered via a star-shaped entrance hall, providing access to the kitchen, a guest toilet, a shower room, with the boiler, and the lounge. The kitchen opens widely on to the garden via series of semi-circular arched windows, supported on short fluted columns with capitals and widely overhanging springers. A door at the end leads to a veranda, backing on to the building. A stairway goes down to the cellar, comprising several segments, including a large vaulted section.
A wooden, dog-leg stairway, with an intermediate landing, leads upstairs from the lounge. On one side a through study leads to a bedroom, with a sloping ceiling, laid out above the kitchen. On the other side are a bathroom, fitted with a bath, a shower and a toilet, a second bedroom and, reached via a corridor, a third, much bigger bedroom which takes up the entire space under the roofing framework. A stepped piece of furniture makes it possible to reach a storage area under the roofing framework and the attic.
The first outbuildingA first outbuilding, on the other side of the porch way, comprises an open space housing the oil tank. A closed room has been converted into a summer kitchen. Above this, a vast attic is currently open on to the first area and the outside. A stairway goes down to a vaulted cellar under the building. The second outbuildingThis building is currently used as a workshop. The attic, above, can be reached via a ladder. The gardenThe flat, enclosed grounds are pleasant to use and easy to maintain. They are planted with a few trees, including some young umbrella pine trees. The veranda, a decorative feature, is ideal for preparing plants and cuttings at the end of the season. The creation of a vegetable garden could be a good idea.
